Seismic data storage

The high-density dataset of digital waveforms recorded in some marine air-gun seismic experiments, such as CROP-M-II ('94), LISA ('95), TOMOVES('96) and MAREVES ('97), were also recorded onshore by some recording-points. These 'stations', served by some Partners⁽²⁾, were equipped with digital Lennartz M88/FD dataloggers. The original data were written into a lot of 1.44 MB floppy disks: starting from those diskettes, the data were then extracted, converted and collected into separate PC-folders titled as the station names (for instance: Vico_Pisano_95). So, each folder contains the full dataset of that station, working during all the off-shore operation of the shooting ships (air-gun sources provided by OGS MN 'Explora' for Crop-M-II, IFREMER M/V 'Nadir' for Lisa and 'Tethys' for Tomoves survey). Finally, the extracted data were compressed and archived into zip.files, in the same folders.

Software and processing information [procedure notes]

To properly process the original floppy discs, recorded on land by Lennartz M88/FD equipments, we used the original Lennartz software marsdump⁽³⁾. Each original floppy contains one or more data-blocks (1024 bytes long: 24 header + 1000 bytes of data (=500 words of 2-bytes-data) starting at full seconds). The command 'marsdump ... -b -e' produces three files, one per channel, in binary form (16-bits word lenght, in 'little-endian' byte sex format).
Each file-name contains the time of the first digit (GMT) in the 'Lennartz' extended form (different channels/components are signed in last digit of the extension as: '0'=VR, '1'=NS, '2'=EW. Example: the file '04011330.321' contains the seismic binary data starting from April 1, 13:30:32, channel 1. NO YEAR is written: it's your job to know it!. Furthermore, in order to merge all the data of one channel, you must pay attention to merge all the proper files, concerning the same channel data (check for the same final digits '0', or '1', or '2').
Finally, for some survey a useful and interactive suite of Matlab programs⁽⁴⁾ has been developed by the Sea-Land Team , for the compilation of the 'Atlas' with the preliminary pre-processed seismic sections.

Important! You need additional data!
These seismic data are usefulness without the relative navigation-data files, which contain all the source parameters (space and time information, charges, etc... in the UKOOA-P1/90⁽⁵⁾ extended format; see info).
