In order to coordinate the European crustal research Projects by means of active seismics method (DSS), for many years the ESC subcommission 'D' was active (SC-D: 'Deep Seismic Soundings'). In Italy the DSS programs were coordinated by the National Group for Long Profiles [ Gruppo Italiano Grandi Profili ] composed by Researchers of the following italian Institutions (academic or not):

- OGS - Osservatorio Geofisico Sperimentale - Trieste;
- CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche): 'IGL' - Milan (up to '91), then: 'IRRS';
- Universities of: Milan, Trieste, Genoa, Neaples, Lecce, Cosenza, Catania, Palermo (Geophysical dept.);
- O.V. - Osservatorio Vesuviano (Neaples).

During many 'ESC' General Assemblies the activity of such subcommission (SC-D) has been reported in special Activity Reports^(*) compiled by the Coordinators: C. Morelli (Uni-Trieste) and P. Giese (Uni-Berlin). The following is a summary of related italian activity:

In the '90ties, the SC-D was organized into 6 Working Groups, and Italian region was included in W.G.3: 'S.W. Europe', responsibles: P.Giese (Berlin) and A.Hirn (Paris). In the XXV Gen. Assembly (Reykjavik, 1996), J. Mechie (Potsdam) was elected as Chairperson for the 'SC-D' DSS (see Proceedings, on-line starting from 1996). After the XXVI Gen. Assembly (Tel Aviv, 1998) the SC-D was reorganized: all the W.G. were formally dissolved and the SC-D recalled Crust and Upper Mantle Structure; J.Mechie was confirmed as Coordinator till the XXVIII Gen. Ass. (Genoa, 2002) where M. Grad (PL) was elected. Into this new SC-D a unique WG was activated, which after 2006 became Crustal Structure Maps of Europe, coordinated by M.Grad (PL) and D.Booth (UK) (see the new ESC structure and Working Groups after Geneva (CH) Gen. Ass., Sept.2006).

Other Reports on Earth Sciences in Italy
in the frame of International Geological Congress [ IGC ]

The main crustal seismic soundings carried out in Italy have been reported also in some special Progress Report on the Earth Sciences in Italy compiled by the CNR Italian Committee^(**) and presented at some IGC Session [pdf] .
